Paikea
In class we have been learning all about paikea. Here is one fact I learned: Paikea came to New Zealand from the Pacific Islands on the back of a whale many centuries ago.I have also been learning how to build vocabulary.
For the activity we created a kite with Maori patterns on it and I also did a jigsaw puzzle and a kahoot about paikea.now time to tell you what I learned,I learned that Paikea is our ancestor. paikea came from his Hawaiki and his Whangara, far across the sea. He first arrived at Ahuahu and proceeded to travel along the shore. When he came ashore he found a wife. He soon had many wives and many children , such was the ancestor Paikea.

When he arrived at Waiapu at a particular place called Te-kautuku , there he saw a very beautiful woman. Her name was Huturangi and she was the princess of the Nukutere canoe. She was also the daughter of the chief Te Whironui and his wife Āraiara. These people were in the process of planting the kūmara which was a very important resource. Paikea knew all the correct prayers and ceremonies for the planting of kumara. So that is what he did. After this they all carried on to te-roto-o-tahu.
I enjoyed learning all about pikea and who was the ancestor.I also enjoyed creating the kite.what did i found challenging what i found challenging was doing the puzzle it took me about 1 minute and it was hard because the 4 people on the back of the boat were all wearing the same thing.and next time i will change the designs and colours on the kite.
Have you ever created a kite before?
DO you know any facts about paikea?
